For the protection of property owners, building permits are
issued by the City of Elberton and are required for (a) new
construction, (b) alteration of an existing building or
structure, and (c) moving buildings. The cost of most building
permits is based on the dollar value of the work being
performed.
In addition to
building permits, supplementary permits are usually required
specific to the type of construction work being performed.
Supplementary permits are:
1.
Electrical
2.
Plumbing
3.
HVAC (Heating and Air)
4.
Natural Gas
5.
Signs
Depending on the
size of the building construction, the building plans may need
to be reviewed by the State of Georgia by the Fire Marshal and
for life safety code adherence.
Most construction
activity requires a Soil Erosion and Protection plan that is
approved by the State of Georgia.
An Occupational
Tax Certificate (Business License) must be obtained from the
City of Elberton prior to commencing business. The amount of
occupation tax is based on the gross receipts of the business
for sales, or if a new business, an estimated amount of gross
receipts for the first calendar year. Occupational tax for most
businesses is limited to $1,000 per year plus an administrative
fee of $30.
